Sandtray Therapy

"The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity" - Carl Jung

Therapy for children

Have you tried more traditional, talk-based forms of therapy and found them limiting or just not a good fit for your needs?

Do you sometimes struggle with expressing your thoughts and feelings through words?

Are you a neurodiverse individual?

Do you want to unleash your creativity and/or explore your unconscious mind?

If any of these apply to you, sandtray therapy may be a good fit.

What Is Sandtray Therapy?

Sandtray is one of the oldest methods of working therapeutically with children; however, since its invention at the beginning of the 20th century, it has been also successfully adapted worldwide for working with adult individuals, couples, and families. I practice the sandtray worldplay approach, for which I received training from the Maritime Play Therapy Centre.

Sandtray worldplay therapy is a type of play therapy in which you create a scene in a tray filled with sand and then use miniatures from my collection to represent your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I then help you explore your creation through creative storytelling, using the miniatures as prompts. This allows for spontaneous and non-threatening expression, and provides insight into your thoughts, feelings, and needs, bringing them to your conscious awareness for exploration and integration.

Based on your preferences and unique needs, sandtray work can be used as a sole form of therapeutic intervention (in this case, each session is based around you creating and processing a new sandtray) or can be used supplementary, as an assessment tool and/or a starting point for further discussion and exploration (in this case, we integrate it with other therapeutic modalities).

Sandtray therapy can be helpful to any client, and especially for people who find it challenging to express their thoughts and feeling through words, who are feeling stuck, neurodiverse individuals, and those who want to explore their unconscious mind.

From personal experience and client feedback, I know that santray work is powerful. The power of play allows you to unleash your creative potential – one of the key ingredients of renewal. Play speaks to the inner child within you and, in the world where adults aren’t often encouraged to play, play allows this child to come forth and share its needs and wisdom.
